President Akufo-Addo to deliver last UN General Assembly address September 25

President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will on Wednesday, 25 September 2024, deliver his last address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) before he leaves office.

The 79th UNGA is taking place at the UN headquarters in New York City, in the United States of America (USA) from Saturday, 21 to Friday, 27 September 2024.

The 79th session of the UN General Assembly is under the theme; “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations”.

As part of the President’s week-long schedule, he will on Sunday, 22 September participate in the opening ceremony and address the plenary meeting of the “Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow”.

The president will also hold bilateral meetings with the President of Finland, the Crown Prince of the State of Kuwait, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis among others. Akufo-Addo will also meet and interact with Ghanaian international civil servants who work at the United Nations.

On Monday, 23 September, President Akufo-Addo and his delegation will participate in a high-level moment to honour victims of slavery at the Ark of Return located at the UN headquarters building. He will also pay a courtesy call to the UN Secretary-General, António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres GCC GCL.

Later this day, President Akufo-Addo will receive an award of honour from the Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award. The Atlantic Council Global Citizen Awards is the premier forum for world leaders, diplomats, the C-Suite, and the philanthropic, social, and entertainment communities to celebrate the highest expression of global citizenship.

Held on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, this special evening underscores the Atlantic Council’s critical mission to shape the global future together, while recognizing the accomplishments of key global citizens seeking to improve the state of the world.

Other heads of state and global leaders who will be receiving the Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award alongside President Akufo-Addo include; Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic, Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic and Miky Lee Vice Chairwoman, CJ Group.

On Tuesday, 24 September, President Akufo-Addo will attend the opening of the General Debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly. The UN Secretary-General, António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres GCC GCL, and the President of the United States, Joe Biden, will be the main speakers before the general debate from all heads of state starts.

A side event of the Summit of the Future on reparations will be attended by President Akufo-Addo and Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley together with the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame. The President will also attend a gala dinner to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the HeForShe initiative and the 40th annual awards gala of the Africa America Institute (AAI).

President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, 25 September 2024, will deliver the national statement of Ghana at the general debate of the 79th UN General Assembly. He will subsequently launch the investment case for the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) and attend the 2nd edition of the Global Africa Forum (GAF).

The W.E.B. Du Bois Museum Foundation will on Thursday, 26 September, host President Akufo-Addo to a luncheon. President Akufo-Addo will also attend the MIPAD achievement awards and the launch of Liberia’s campaign for membership in the UN Security Council before he departs the United States on Friday, 27 September 2024.
